John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, is a veteran Nigerian actor and comedian, best known for his comedic roles in Nollywood films. He was born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu State, Nigeria.

Okafor’s journey to stardom began in the late 90s when he started featuring in movies, earning widespread recognition for his unique style of comedy characterized by his eccentric facial expressions and hilarious antics. His stage name, “Mr. Ibu,” was derived from one of his most popular roles in which he played a bumbling and comically inept character.

Despite facing several challenges early in his career, including financial struggles and rejection, Okafor persevered and eventually became one of the most sought-after comic actors in Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry.

Throughout his career, Mr. Ibu has appeared in numerous Nollywood movies, delighting audiences with his impeccable comedic timing and natural flair for humor. Some of his most notable films include:

Education

Mr. Ibu was enrolled in the College of Education in Yola after completing secondary school, but he dropped out owing to financial difficulties.

He later enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu to pursue a degree.

Career

John Okafor joined the Nigerian film industry in 1998 but was unable to secure lucrative parts because producers were unwilling to give him the opportunity to display his ability in significant movies.

He rose to notoriety in 2004 with his performance in the hit comedic movie “Mr. Ibu.” He portrayed the father of a troubled son. Osita Iheme took on the role of the son.

The team created an exceedingly funny film that was widely distributed across the country and was recognised as the greatest comedy project at the time.

His performance in the film earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Comic Actor in Nigeria in 2005.

He also got the nickname “Mr Ibu” from the movie.

Okafor has appeared in more than 200 Nollywood films, including Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr. Ibu in London, Police Recruit, 9 Wives, Ibu in Prison, and Keziah.

The veteran actor is also considered one of Nigeria’s most prominent actors.
